AVP FOR INCARCERATED VETERANS

The victims of PTSD often feel morally tainted by their experiences, unable to recover confidence in their own goodness, trapped in a sort of spiritual solitary confinement, looking back at the rest of the world from beyond the barrier of what happened.  They find themselves unable to communicate their condition to those who remained at home, resenting civilians for their bind innocence.

We are pleased to have Roger Kluck present a workshop on the Veterans Pilot Project in Seattle WA.  This specialized version of AVP Basic has been used in 25 workshops for jailed military veterans. Serious PTSD and traumatic brain injuries are a frequent occurrence in male and female service members from the Vietnam through Iraq and Afghanistan eras.  Some become incarcerated due to self-medication for pain and stress.  Some are homeless.
Veterans and especially combat veterans are trained to be quickly reactive.   Their lives and the lives of their comrades depend on quick decisive responses.  This essential training, while crucial in active duty, becomes a handicap in civilian life.  AVP Basic has been adapted to address these issues.  Statistics from more than 2 years of research show that the exceptionally high levels of anger drop to well below normal after AVP.  Participants report that this should be part of every service person’s process after leaving the military.
Roger Kluck has been facilitating since 2004 with over 150 workshops in prisons, jails, schools and in community.  He is a trained leader of several Advanced AVP Trauma Recovery Workshops.   With Friends of Peace Teams, he has done AVP in Guatemala and El Salvador.  He has led one day workshops with the State Department’s International Visitors Program with participants from more than 30 countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Brazil, and Mexico.
