Earlham College is a small Quaker liberal arts college on the west side of Richmond, Indiana. It was built in 1847 and has a student body of about 1100. Earlham's historical beginning in Richmond, is rooted in the Great Migration of Quakers from the eastern United States in the first half of the nineteenth century. Originally a co-educational "select" school, open only to Friends, by 1865 the school accepted non-Quaker students and hired its first non-Quaker professor in 1886. Today, about 11% of Earlham's faculty and 12% of its students identify as Quakers.During May, Earlham holds a special month long intensive term, so don't be surprised if you see students. At the center of the campus is a circular patch of green space, endearingly referred to as The Heart where students play frisbee, talk politics, or pursue other interests on warm days. Behind the campus on the North West side is an area known as "Back Campus." Here there is a series of easy and beautiful trails that lead to the local Clear Creek and through a beautiful wooded area. Earlham is just a 20 minute walk from Richmond's down town area. Â
