A North Philadelphia treasure, the Wagner Free Institute of  Science is located at 1700 Montgomery Avenue, just 2 blocks west of Temple.  Founded in 1855, the Wagner Free Institute of Science is dedicated to providing free public education in science.  The Institute’s Museum houses more than 100,000 natural history specimens.  Completed in 1865, the Institute’s National Historic Landmark building is essentially unchanged since the late-nineteenth century and includes a Victorian Exhibition Hall filled with fossils, shells, minerals and mounted animal skeletons and skins displayed in original wood and glass cabinets. Ifyou would like to explore downtown Philadelphia, the train at 10thand Berks St. goes to Market East (10th & Market Sts), which isa short walk to the Reading Terminal Market and Chinatown. The Independence Visitor’s Center, which can provide moredetailed information and a map of historical attractions, is about 5 blockseast between 5th and 6th on Market Street. The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, Christ Church, Arch Street Meetinghouse andthe National Constitution Center are all located near theVisitor’s Center.
